This marker is the burial plot of Paul Dowlin located in our old fort cemetery. Paul was the post sutler who succeeded one Lawrence G. Murphy who was tossed from fort property in 1873. Mr. Dowlin was mysteriously murdered the next year.

Entry gate to Fort Stanton cemeteries. This is also the site of a U.S. Public Health Service Hospital cemetery originally established in 1899. The site also has a few burials of German merchant marines detained at Fort Stanton just prior to the outbreak of World War II.

On Oct. 2, 2015, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs approved the state’s application and awarded a $5.7 million grant to build a new State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Stanton.
