Fort Stanton Historic Site invites volunteers to join in a special Park Day event on Saturday, May 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in celebration of the site’s 170th anniversary. Volunteers will assist with trail clean-up efforts to enhance access and preserve the grounds for future generations.
Established in 1855, Fort Stanton has served many roles throughout its long and complex history—including as a military garrison during the Civil War and Territorial era, a tuberculosis treatment center, and a World War II internment site. Today, it stands as one of the most intact historic forts in New Mexico, offering a unique window into the region’s past.
Volunteers are encouraged to wear outdoor-appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, and a hat, and to bring plenty of drinking water.
Let’s honor Fort Stanton’s legacy together—your help ensures it remains a vibrant and welcoming place for generations to come.
